“You want me to find them?”

“The people Eli is working with are scavengers.”
“So you think I’ll be able to find them easily?”

Borin bit her lip.

Borin bowed her head slightly.
“Please, I’m asking for your help.”
“Fine. But I have one condition.”
“Please, name it. If it’s something we can do, we’ll make it happen.”
“Grant me one favor in the future, when I need it.”
“A favor?”
“I don’t have anything specific in mind yet. Just consider it a debt you’ll owe me.”
“I understand. We were prepared to pay a price for your help anyway.”
This was, after all, a matter involving Eli’s rebellion. Borin had no room to negotiate.

“Well then, I’ll take my leave.”
Borin stood with a relieved expression.
As she left, Brielle poked her head out from behind a door.
“Is she gone?”
“She’s gone.”
“Seriously, what’s with showing up unannounced like that? Elves are so annoying.”
“You avoided her on purpose, didn’t you?”
“Well, nothing good comes from meeting her face-to-face. One elf in my life is more than enough, and that’s Mandy.”
“Fair enough.”
Zeon nodded.
For some reason, Brielle didn’t enjoy interacting with other elves. Zeon, knowing her disposition, didn’t find it odd.
More importantly, Gaia’s head was peeking out from behind Brielle. She had been with Gaia in the room the whole time.
Letting anyone, even an elf, see Gaia was a risk Zeon couldn’t afford.

The land became desert, and the few surviving creatures were left to endure grueling lives.
In the end, the greed of elves and other non-humans had brought misery to both worlds.
Brielle hadn’t thought about this in the past.
She never believed the elves had committed such a grave sin.
Back then, she had been consumed by hatred toward humans and thought the destruction was well-deserved. But after Zeon saved her and freed her from her drug addiction, she spent time in the slums and learned to see things differently.
She realized the extent of the wrongs committed by non-human races.
“A race burdened by deep, original sin. And I am one of them. How could I ever stand tall in front of humans?”

Gaia gently wrapped her chest fins around Brielle, as if comforting her.
Gaia looked at Brielle with a soft, smiling expression.
It felt like she was saying, “It’s okay.”

“Yeah.”
Thanks to Gaia, Brielle quickly regained her energy.
Zeon smiled and slipped on his robe.
“Heading out?”

Several days had passed since they’d asked him to track down the scavengers, but Argos’s Eyes had yet to report anything.
It wasn’t that Argos’s Eyes were incompetent, it just meant the scavengers were operating with extreme secrecy.

Brielle adjusted her pointed hat and said.
“I’m coming with you.”
“Are you sure?”
“About what?”

“Eat while we talk.”

“Okay!”
Zeon and Brielle picked up their spoons.

They sipped the broth first.
As expected, it was delicious.

“This is great.”

Brielle set down her spoon and stood up.
“Someone underground is calling for help.”
