Chapter 5: Return

"Did something happen during the dimensional transfer?"

The axis of time wasn’t distorted.

That much was certain.

The most critical elements in dimensional travel are coordinates and time.

If the time between the two worlds is even slightly off or contains errors, you can’t survive the dimensional rift.

Since it came from Artenis, who had a fair amount of knowledge about dimensional transfer, it had to be accurate.

It was a bit absurd, but honestly, things like slight changes in physical appearance could easily occur when exposed to the immense energy in the dimensional rift.

So he quickly dismissed it from his mind.

"Next time I try this, I need to make sure they fix that problem too. If that frail body gets damaged, it’ll be a disaster, damn it."

No one else would dare call a Dragon Lord, a being far beyond even the Transcendents, ‘frail’.

When a Spirit King of a single elemental attribute, the pinnacle of nature, begins to receive spirit energy from a Spirit Master and unleashes their power, they may not match Artenis, but they can come close.

It would consume a massive amount of spirit energy, but becoming a Transcendent Spirit Master wasn’t a position one earned by playing games.

If multiple Spirit Kings gathered under the right conditions and unleashed their power, the influence would be unimaginable.

Of course, it would require countless spirit stones, but Spirit Kings are beings not bound by dimensions.

And in the Rune Continent, they handed over spirit stones to Spirit Kings like it was nothing, so it hadn’t been an issue.

"Shit... First, I need to find out if I arrived properly."

Yeonwoo mumbled quietly as he stretched his aching body.

The cracking sounds made it clear how badly off his body was.

"Hmm... This foul air is unmistakable."

He wasn’t sure what region this was, whether it was even Korea where he used to live, or if it was the same era’s Earth.

But somewhere deep inside, he had a strong sense that he had returned properly.

A hollow laugh escaped his lips as he looked around at the familiar landscape from his memories.

Then he stopped and drew a short breath.

"No signs of destruction, but also no people... Don't tell me I was summoned into a monster field?"

A monster rift is essentially the origin of monsters appearing on Earth.

That is, various colors of mist would appear simultaneously across Earth and consume small regions.

They could be as small as a narrow alley or as large as the size of a big gate.

Although it was called mist, it was practically a gate.

Yeonwoo remembered three types of these gates.

First, the open-type mist, which couldn’t be entered, and after about an hour of forming, monsters would pour out.

Second, the field-type mist, like this one, where a virtual space mimicking Earth's environment forms, and monsters appear inside.

Lastly, the dungeon-type mist, a closed-space virtual zone akin to a dungeon.

There were three types in total.

The place Yeonwoo was currently in seemed to be a field-type mist, which was the second most common.

It could be called field-type, red mist, or anything else, the name didn’t matter.

This field-type mist, after a certain amount of time, would transform into an open-type mist.

And from what he remembered, the monsters that emerged afterward were more numerous and of higher level than typical open-type mist monsters.

"If I still had my Hunter Engraving, I’d have known right away..."

He muttered and looked around, clearly annoyed.

When he was caught in that multicolored explosion and woke up in the Rune Continent, Yeonwoo had lost the Hunter System along with it.

Even if he had returned, there was no guarantee that system would come back.

"Not that I really need it anyway."

The only ability it gave was the power to check information on monsters, people, or items.

Aside from the Hunter's unique trait of piercing strange monster defenses, it had no other significant merit.

On the other hand, after losing the Hunter System, Yeonwoo reached the level of Transcendent through various fortuitous events.

He had no regrets.

Still, what bothered him was that as a Hunter, he could have instantly identified whether this was a rift.

"Guess I’ll need to scout the area with spirits."

He clicked his tongue briefly and raised a hand.

Then he recited a familiar incantation to summon a spirit.

"Sylph."

The lesser spirit of wind, Sylph, whom he used to summon effortlessly.

That spirit should’ve appeared right at his fingertips...

"Hm?"

It didn’t appear.

"What the hell is this."

Was Sylph, who should have answered the call, acting like a rebellious teenager and running away from home?

"Sylph!"

Yeonwoo shouted again in surprise, but Sylph still didn’t respond.

"What’s going on here?"

The absence of his spirit, his friend, his partner, like family brought Yeonwoo into a state of shock.

"Khaza! Gnome! Naiad!"

Other elemental spirits were the same.

As Yeonwoo's plan to summon Artenis fell apart from the start, the composure in his expression rapidly vanished.

"This doesn’t make sense. Even on Earth, spirits should be summonable. If not, then..."

If lesser spirits didn’t work, he would summon higher ones.

If low-rank spirits couldn’t be summoned, he’d just call upon someone above them.

"Salamandra! Shade!!"

But the silence continued.

Anyone watching would think he’d lost his mind, his expression was filled with desperation.

"Sylphid!"

The name of his partner, family, and friend, the Spirit King.

He called out as if grabbing at a lifeline.

But as if to confirm his fears, there was no response to his cry.

"Goddammit!!"

Catching his breath, Yeonwoo staggered and leaned against a nearby wall.

'Summoning failed. Why? Is it because this dimension is different?'

The thought chilled him momentarily, but he quickly shook his head.

Earth was still a dimension touched by spirits.

Every being bears immense risk when traveling across dimensions, except for spirits.

They are unique in that regard.

The reason is simple.

Because nature, part of what spirits are, exists everywhere.

Also, when a contract is formed, spirits appear through that connection.

Spirits can be summoned from the nearest natural landscape.

Sometimes, spirits in the Spirit Realm are called, both happen frequently.

So failing to summon because it’s a different dimension was nonsense.

Something else was going on.

But before figuring that out, he had to escape what he assumed was a rift.

Even if it wasn’t a field-type rift, he needed to meet people and gather information.

Without spirit power or a Hunter’s environmental scanning ability, he had no choice but to investigate the old-fashioned way, by foot.

It was a bit of a pain, but Yeonwoo didn’t hesitate.

After running for a while,

Yeonwoo sensed a presence behind him and turned.

A creature shorter than a person.

Scrawny yellow body, hooked nose, fierce and vicious eyes, and a pickaxe in one hand.

Familiar.

No, more than familiar, he’d caught these things multiple times during experiments.

"Kobold."

A sigh escaped his lips as if to say, of course.
