Chapter 1: Prologue
It had been nearly three years since the first ‘Hell gate’ incident, the catastrophic event that brought monsters into the world.
At 23, Park Yeonwoo worked as a Recon Hunter.
A Recon Hunter was literally a hunter who supported combat-type hunters—their role was to provide information and support so that combat hunters could fight properly.
That’s the ideal, at least.
In reality, Recon Hunters were often seen as freeloaders or parasites and their relations with combat Hunters were usually strained.
Why were they treated that way, even though intel was crucial?
Simple, the market was flooded with Recon Hunters, and there were no solid rules for valuing the intel they collected.
Information, once shared, rapidly lost its worth.
Yet Recon Hunters still wanted continuous compensation as if their findings had enduring value.
Even when angry Recon hunters called for strikes, the biggest problem was that the situation was turbulent and there were plenty of Recon hunters who could replace them.
That was the harsh truth.
In the middle of this quiet cold war, Yeonwoo quietly continued his work as a Recon Hunter, until one day, he took a job that sent him and a group of Recon Hunters down to South Jeolla Province.
He departed without worry because there weren't many strong monsters and there were definitely guardians, meaning they could escape anytime.
But in fact, it was a trap set by some upper groups who despised the large number of Recon hunters and treated Yeonwoo as an eyesore.
The result: all 30 Recon Hunters on the mission were wiped out.
Yeonwoo couldn’t escape death either.
As he lay dying from a fatal wound, his dimming eyes caught a strange sight of a shimmering, multicolored explosion with no clear cause.
Then he woke up.
Not on Earth but on the Rune Continent.
When survival’s on the line, there’s nothing one won’t do.
Even when he fell into the hands of the Hellhounds, a brutal demon bandit group known for their cruelty, Yeonwoo survived by choosing slavery over death.
There were monsters so terrifying they paralyzed you just by sight.
Battlefields soaked in blood and madness.
A world more hellish than any hell.
Yet even in that nightmare, he lived with grit, wit, and unshakable willpower.
Eventually, he followed the Hellhounds on a raid against the lair of Dragon Lord Artenis and was captured by her.
All the demons were slaughtered but he was lucky enough to save his life.
Afterward, he bowed his head to her who was trying to kill him and desperately begged for his life
What did she see in him?
Instead of killing him, she asked about his past, not his life on Rune, but his life on Earth.
Perhaps it intrigued her.
Perhaps it was something else.
Whatever it was, Artenis slowly set aside her disdain and hostility.
She began treating Yeonwoo as a guest.
He’d arrived in Rune around age 23.
Over the next 13 years, he endured trials and tribulations , and survived.
What did he gain in return?
A half-dragon body
Contracts with 13 Spirit Kings
Deep, specialized knowledge of monsters and the Rune Continent.
And most precious of all a new family.
It may sound short, or impossibly long, but in that time, he seized more than most do in a lifetime.
And now, setting all of that behind him, he returned to Earth for one singular, most important goal.
