Chapter 38 - Becoming a Dog (1)
"Ugh, where am I...?
Clyden opened his eyes to the sound of loud arguing.
His head was ringing and a sharp pain throbbed through his head but his entire body was tightly bound so he couldn't move.
"How could you bring such a useless human along?"
"Nya, it's fun!"
"Pretty!"
"Shut up! My head is ringing!"
"Nya, he's awake!"
As soon as Pretty noticed that Clyden was awake, she happily laughed and approached him.
"What’s going on? Why bring someone like me along? I’m useless!"
"So, you do realize you’re worthless."
Rupert glared coldly at Clyden who met his gaze with equal intensity.
"If you don’t untie me, you’ll regret it."
"Let’s see. I was thinking of just killing you since you’re nothing but a burden."
His eyes were cold, devoid of any emotion.
Clyden felt a cold sweat running down his back.
‘This guy… he’s serious.’
Clyden looked around, trying to find a way to escape.
It was still dark so he couldn’t see much but the surrounding area seemed to be an open space with no buildings, only a path leading through what appeared to be an empty lot.
"Well, you’re the one who caused our mission to fail, so I’ll personally take care of you."
The sound of cold metal sliding echoed as Rupert drew his sword.
"Please, spare me!"
"..."
"...Huh? Why the sudden change in attitude?"
Rupert seemed confused but Clyden forced a pitiful smile.
"Hehe, a single life is the most precious thing, right? What do you gain from killing someone as useless as me? Just let me go."
Rupert frowned in confusion but Pretty was laughing loudly, finding it amusing.
"Kyaa! This guy is so fun!"
"How unpleasant. Begging for your life in such a cowardly way. And you still claim to be a knight!"
"I’m not a knight. I’m just a sergeant in the Empire’s army. We’re not at war and in times like these, saving my life is much more important than any useless honor."
"To insult your lord and dishonor the very ideals of knighthood!"
Rupert's voice grew angry.
When Clyden's pleas to spare him didn’t work, he frantically started searching for another way out but then he felt a sharp pain in his right hand.
"You’ll regret it if you kill me!"
"Heh, I won’t regret killing you!"
"I have the blessing of a dragon!"
Clyden’s declaration caused Rupert to freeze his raised sword.
Clyden let out a relieved sigh and gave a triumphant grin.
"Ha! Aren’t you going to untie me now? Should I call the dragon? Huh?"
"Suddenly a dragon? Do you think I’ll believe that?"
"Don’t believe it? Didn’t you see my power earlier? How do you think I was able to use such power? Come on, hurry up and untie me! I swear, I’ll call the dragon!"
Clyden who had switched from begging for his life to a more cocky attitude, made Rupert want to kill him immediately.
Rupert knew he couldn’t just kill him without consequences if he had the blessing of a dragon.
"Pretty! What are you doing?"
"Nya, I want to see a dragon!"
"Hey, you know something!"
Once Clyden was untied, he stood up and stretched his limbs.
He then crossed his arms and arrogantly looked at Rupert.
"Are you scared now? Ha ha ha!"
"Ugh!"
Rupert trembled with rage as he glared at Clyden.
He wasn’t sure whether to believe his words but the mention of a dragon was too serious to ignore.
"Kyaa, call it! Call it! I want to see a dragon!"
"Ugh! I don’t trust your words. Call it! If you summon a dragon, my life will end right there but if you’re lying, today will be the last day of your life!"
"Hmph! If you want it so badly, I’ll summon it. Come out!"
Clyden raised his right hand and shouted.
"..."
Then he realized he had heard that he could summon Alphaide, but he didn’t know how to call it.
"Nya, this is boring. It’s not coming out!"
Pretty pouted, looking disappointed.
Rupert stepped closer to Clyden.
"Wait a minute, this isn’t right. Hey! Come out! Hey!"
Clyden with a panicked expression took a few steps back and shouted as he clutched his right hand.
"Hey! Come out, Alphaide! Hey, bro! Little brother, I’m gonna die here! Come on out, you lizard bastard!"
As Rupert approached, Clyden desperately shouted.
Whether it was his urgent tone or not, a faint light began to swirl around his right hand.
