Chapter 28 - First Mission! (5)
Clyden and Lydis kept their eyes fixed on the rustling bushes.
They were startled when the creature that emerged from the underbrush came into view.
“An orc!”
“An elf!”
“Where! Where’s the elf?”
“Where’s the orc?”
Frantically, they both looked around.
Neither of them could find the creature they were shouting about.
They glared at each other and shouted.
“There’s nothing!”
“I don’t see an orc. What are you playing at!”
While they bickered, they pointed at the creature that emerged from the bushes.
“Look! There’s the orc!”
“Look! Don’t you see the elf, Sergeant!”
“….”
“Wait, elf? Where do you see an elf?”
Clyden carefully observed the creature that had stepped out of the bushes, staring at it in confusion.
Green skin, a pig-like nose, and bulging eyes.
No matter where you looked, it had an appearance that would immediately make you say.
“It’s an orc!”
“Haa… Sergeant! Orcs-elf are among the most powerful races after the humans. Luckily, it seems like it doesn’t understand our language but if it had, this could’ve escalated into an international issue.”
“Oh, I heard that all!”
The creature’s hideous appearance was in stark contrast to the clear, bright voice that came from it.
Lydis immediately apologized to the orc-elf creature.
“I’m sorry. This human is just so poorly educated….”
“What?”
What this? Clyden's idealized image of elves shattered, seriously wondered about the situation.
Then he glared at her in frustration because of her comment.
“You don’t help out at all but keep finding fault with me!”
“What! If you don’t know something, at least have some common sense!”
“Haha, you two seem to get along quite well!”
“Nonsense!”
“Forest dweller, I deeply regret what that human did, but it’s embarrassing that you’re insulting me like that.”
Zzziii!
Electric sparks flashed fiercely between Lydis and Clyden who were glaring at each other.
“Haha, my apologies for being late to introduce myself. I’m Piruril. I’m one of the forest guardians.”
“Yes, I am Lydis Hugh Iron from the Iron Duke family of the Muras Empire. I serve as the Leader of the Imperial Army's Civil Assistance Special Forces. This is the Vice Leader Sergeant Clyden.”
“Ah, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I sensed a sudden, intense mana fluctuation and came to investigate. Fortunately, it seems I’m not too late.”
“Not too late? If you were any later, I’d be greeting you from inside a goblin’s stomach!”
“Haha, I found the goblins and blew the Pact Pipe to drive them away. Didn’t you hear the sound of the pipe?
Lydis teased him for pretending to be the hero when he wasn’t the one who did anything.
It seemed that Clyden didn’t even hear her words.
Piruril brought one hand to her mouth and smiled elegantly.
Lydis tensed up and instinctively got into a guard stance.
“Hmm? What’s with the stance?”
“Well… ahem, it just came out of instinct.”
Lydis glared at Clyden with a suspicious expression but he just cleared his throat and avoided eye contact.
“You seem injured. Would you like to visit our village so we can treat your wounds?”
“Thank you… But we have two other companions with us.”
“Ah! Do you mean Eres and Kaysis? Another forest guardian must have already guided them to the village.”
“Phew… that’s a relief.”
“That damn bro-com… sigh! Whoever ends up with Eres in the future is in for a rough time.”
“They say the worst in-laws are the sisters-in-law and if I were in her shoes, I’d just commit suicide, honestly!”
“Ugh!”
Clyden and Lydis bickered as they provided first aid and followed Piruril to the village.
