"Tell me, whose fault do you think it is that I’m suffering like this, huh?"
Once again, the knights collapsed.
"Because we’ve got a noble in our ranks! Now we’ve got high-ranking officials coming by, and curious onlookers gathering. All of it’s just wonderful, huh?! Oh? Moving too slow again?"
The knights scrambled back into position and braced themselves.
"But why—why the hell do these random noble brats keep showing up? Some count’s eldest son? Some marquis’s second son? A baron’s kid from god-knows-where? Why do they keep barging in and hassling me nonstop?"
Every time Clyden barked, the knights collapsed.
"I’m not their damn subordinate! If I could just grab one of those punks and beat them until my arms got tired, I’d feel a whole lot better. Don’t you think so?"
By now, the knights had given up resisting—they just fell in sync with each shout.
"I’m a precious son in my own family too, dammit! And now, because we’ve got a ‘distinguished’ leader, even more of those damn nobles are gonna start swarming in! Oh? Moving even slower now? When those snobby nobles show up and strut around."
The knights groaned, sprawled out on the ground like fallen logs.
Clyden glared at them and spoke in a low voice.
"If I see you anywhere near me again, I’ll make sure you find out firsthand what it means to get ground into paste. If anyone’s curious, go ahead—try me. Now get lost!"
Dragging their battered bodies, the knights limped away as fast as they could.
Clyden swept his gaze over the crowd and muttered just loud enough for everyone to hear.
"If any of you noble bastards show up here again, I swear I’ll rip open your guts, twist your intestines into a noose, and snap your necks with it. Just try me. Just give me one excuse."
His words sent a shudder through the crowd.
People looked at him as if he were the devil himself, then started slipping away one by one.
Once the scene had mostly cleared, Clyden nudged the squad leaders who had been rolling around with the knights.
"Quit your whining! Get up already!"
The three of them scrambled to their feet.
Clyden shot them a hard glare.
"If the Platoon leader was pulling this kind of crap, you should’ve reported it to me on the first day. But instead, you idiots just grinned and went along with it—until it got too much for you, and only then did you come crying to me?!"
"Th-That’s not it…"
"Shut up! What the hell has been going on these past two days?!"
"Ugh… well, we didn’t do much of anything."
"What the hell does that mean?"
"It means… the leader has been standing at the gate, glaring at people like she’s hunting her lifelong enemy, while her knights randomly stopped and searched everyone who came through.”
“The process was so slow that some people who arrived in the morning didn’t get inside the city until lunchtime. Everyone was pissed, but since they were the duke’s knights, no one dared to complain…"
"And you so-called squad leaders just stood there doing nothing?!"
"We had no authority to stop it… and the one person we could rely on, Eres got forced on leave when the leader shoved a leave permit into his hands and sent him off."
"Oh, for fuck’s sake…"
Clyden groaned, rubbing his temples in exasperation.
Thinking about the rest of his military service just gave Clyden a headache.
"I'm heading to the infirmary to get some rest."
"What?! No way! Just kill us instead!"
"Hey! Let go! I said, let go already!"
The squad leaders clung to him with everything they had, shouting desperately.
Struggling to shake them off, Clyden finally threw his head back and yelled toward the sky,
"Who the hell is making my military life such a goddamn disaster?!"
His cry echoed beneath the piercingly blue sky.
