Chapter 24

“What… what is happening?”

A young girl with snow-white skin and golden hair glanced around in confusion.

She was as beautiful as a doll, with striking violet eyes.

Jeanne D' Arc.

Jeanne.

The girl looked bewildered by the sudden change in her surroundings.

To her, it must have seemed as if she had been transported from the execution pyre to a curio shop in an instant.

But this was only the beginning of the surprises to come.

“Sir Seojun, look outside.”

Her violet eyes widened like a startled rabbit at the sight reflected in the glass.

“My goodness, the metal is moving!”

I couldn’t help but smile at her innocent reaction.

Beyond the window stretched a vast, gray cityscape filled with cars weaving through the streets.

By metal, she was referring to automobiles.

“This is the world I live in. It seems you’ve been brought here along with me.”

“This place…”

Jeanne leaned closer to the window, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

“It’s nothing like France at all.”

“In simple terms, this is the future.”

I explained it in a way she could understand.

This was the world six centuries after 15th-century France a full 600 years into the future.

Of course, I left out the fact that this wasn’t necessarily the same world.

It would already be difficult enough for her to accept the concept of time travel introducing parallel universes would only complicate things further.

“Then… does that mean you’re from the future?”

“That’s one way to look at it.”

“And I… came to the future with you.”

She seemed surprised but also strangely accepting of the situation.

After all, every time she had faced death, I had always warned her in advance.

That said, I was just as shocked as she was.

‘I never expected her to come with me.’

I had intended to save her, but the idea that she would actually cross into my world had never even crossed my mind.

In all my experiences with other worlds, relics had occasionally found their way across dimensions but never a person.

‘Is history unraveling?’

The system had labeled Jeanne as a ‘Distorted One’.

She was meant to perish by fire, but by surviving beyond her fated death, she had become an anomaly, a glitch in history itself.

[TL/N: Ayo Spiderman reference]

And so, history had seemingly rejected her.

As a consequence, I had been denied my reward, the ‘Banner of Saints’.

But I didn’t care.

As long as Jeanne was alive and well, I had no use for some bloodstained relic of sacrifice.

Besides, I already possessed two legendary relics, what was one banner compared to that?

As I watched Jeanne marvel at the new world before her, a small smile crept onto my lips.

That was when it happened.

[A new entry has been added.]

‘…?’

A system notification flashed before my eyes.

A catalog I had never seen before unfolded before me.

==

◆ Transcendent Catalog

─ Jeanne D' Arc

==

‘Transcendent?’

Curious, I selected Jeanne’s entry, revealing a list of her details.

==

[The Saved Girl, Jeanne D' Arc]

[Rank: Legendary]

[Attribute: Holy]

[Current Manifestation Time: 6 hours]

[Resummon Cooldown: 2 hours]

─ The Saint of France, Jeanne D' Arc, is a Catholic figure who saved France during the Hundred Years’ War.

Her fate should have ended in fire, yet she has defied her destined death and been granted salvation.

==

My eyes widened as I read through her status.

‘Jeanne… is legendary?’

The Jeanne D' Arc I knew was nothing more than a simple village girl, someone who didn’t even possess magic.

A girl who had been forced into sacrifice through the ‘Banner of Saints’ and a replica of the stigmata.

Yet, that same ordinary girl now bore the rank of ‘Legendary’.

It was shocking but not incomprehensible.

This was a world where even relics from famous historical figures carried power.

And Jeanne wasn’t just a relic; she was a person.

Her name was known across the world.

Among saints, only the Virgin Mary herself could rival Jeanne’s recognition.

As long as people remembered her as a saint and revered her as a hero, Jeanne’s power would never fade.

By rejecting the Banner of Saints, I had, in a way, gained a saint instead.

That said.

‘Holy attribute?’

I tilted my head at the unfamiliar designation.

‘I’ve heard of Light attributes before, but Holy?’

It was a term I had never encountered.

Puzzled, I set the thought aside.

Right now, my priority was checking on Jeanne’s condition.

She had been imprisoned for a long time and had just barely escaped the execution pyre.

But my concern turned out to be unnecessary.

“I feel strangely full of energy.”

Jeanne moved her arms and legs curiously, as if testing out her body.

There was no trace of fatigue from her time in captivity.

‘Is it because she’s become legendary?’

It made sense but there were still things that needed to be done.

“Let’s change your bandages first.”

I pulled out fresh bandages from my subspace backpack and carefully unwrapped the bloodstained ones from Jeanne’s back.

And then I froze.

‘It’s… clean.’

Her back was astonishingly smooth.

The stigmata hadn’t disappeared, but the deep wounds that had once carved into her flesh had faded.

Her rough skin had turned pale and flawless.

The once grotesque scars now resembled a sacred engraving like the true stigmata said to have been borne by Saint Francis of Assisi.

“Is something wrong?”

Jeanne, noticing that I was silently staring at her back, tilted her head in curiosity.

“Does the stigmata not hurt?”

“Now that you mention it… no, it doesn’t. What’s going on?”

She, too, seemed surprised to realize that she was perfectly fine.

‘Looks like she won’t need bandages anymore.’

Just in case, I wiped her back clean and wrapped it with fresh bandages.

If anyone saw those markings, they might associate them with stigmata.

‘Better safe than sorry.’

After tending to Jeanne, another issue presented itself.

“Hmm.”

“Is something wrong?”

“Not exactly, but… you’ll need a change of clothes.”

Jeanne, looking puzzled, was as angelic as ever but the real problem was her attire.

A medieval execution dress wasn’t exactly something she could wear in the modern world.

And since I wasn’t well-versed in women’s fashion, I called for reinforcements.

—Why? I’m busy right now.

“I’ll give you some spending money. Just come to my shop.”

—Right now?

“Yeah, right now.”

—Alright, I’m on my way!

The cavalry I summoned was none other than my younger sister, Choi Seoyeon.

***

“Oppa, are you kidnapping people now?”

“If you keep talking nonsense, no allowance for you.”

“…Who’s she?”

Seoyeon whispered as she glanced at Jeanne, who was sitting quietly in the shop.

“Her name’s Jeanne. She’s a foreign Hunter. The association assigned her to me, so I’m looking after her.”

“Wow, she’s seriously pretty.”

Seoyeon didn’t seem interested in my excuse at all. She was too busy admiring Jeanne.

“Here’s my card. Take her shopping for some clothes.”

“Got it. Leave it to me.”

Her eyes sparkled with a dangerous excitement like a kid about to play dress-up with a doll.

“If you make her wear anything weird, no allowance.”

“Relax. I’m a pro at this.”

Her confidence made me slightly uneasy, but she had a good fashion sense; she took after me, after all.

“It’s nice to meet you. I’m Choi Seoyeon, Hunter Choi Seojun’s younger sister.”

“Oh, so you’re his sister.”

Jeanne’s response made Seoyeon tilt her head.

“Who did you think I was?”

“You two seem so close, so I thought you were lovers.”

“Cough!”

I nearly choked on my own breath.

“Absolutely not. That will never, ever happen. Not in this lifetime or the next.”

Seoyeon vehemently denied it with a disgusted look. Jeanne, for some reason, looked slightly pleased.

‘At least communication isn’t a problem.’

Jeanne was a 15th-century European who didn’t know a word of Korean, but she could converse effortlessly with Seoyeon.

It meant she shared the same language comprehension ability I received whenever I traveled to other worlds.

Just to be safe, I decided to follow them to the shopping mall.

“I’ll wait here. Go pick something out.”

“Alright.”

As Seoyeon helped Jeanne choose clothes, I sat near the store entrance, waiting.

After about ten minutes, Jeanne emerged from the fitting room, wearing her new outfit.

“How is it?”

“……”

Jeanne was wearing a pure white dress.

She looked just like an angel descended from heaven.

“Well?”

“You did well.”

I immediately transferred 300,000 won to Seoyeon.

“Yesss! Oppa, I’ve got plans, so I’ll head out first!”

Guess she really was busy.

After Seoyeon left in a hurry, I turned back to Jeanne.

She was fidgeting with her dress, seemingly unused to wearing something like this.

“Does it look weird?”

“It suits you perfectly.”

The white dress matched Jeanne’s aura flawlessly. Calling Seoyeon had been the right choice.

She really had a great eye for fashion.

Now then.

“Jeanne, aren’t you hungry?”

“Bread is enough for me.”

Even in the midst of war, Jeanne had survived on coarse black bread and watery soup.

It had become a habit for her.

She had never eaten anything delicious.

That bastard Bishop of Cambrai had devoured all the good food.

‘That son of a bitch.’

I regretted not beating him up more.

I should’ve dragged him out of the chapel and given him a proper thrashing.

“Come on, let’s get you some real food.”

“Real food?”

“Yeah. This world has an amazing food culture.”

First things first I needed to feed Jeanne.

She had probably gone an entire week without a proper meal, thanks to those damned inquisitors.

“What does ‘food culture’ mean?”

“It means the cooking here is really good.”

Her violet eyes sparkled like gemstones.

She swallowed hard, not saying anything, but her excitement was obvious.

I chuckled and took her hand.

“Let’s go.”

Samgyeopsal, kimchi, bulgogi, fried chicken…

I wanted to introduce her to real Korean food.

[PR/N: There’s a character illustration of Jeanne in this chapter.]
