Chapter 100

"Young Master Leon."

Just as I was about to leave, he called out to me.

"Yes."

"Good luck. Please save the people here."

He smiled gently, endlessly soft.

* * *

[Your heart rate is different from usual.]

"No, I don't get along well with those types of people."

[From a general perspective, there’s nothing unusual about him.]

"Sure, if you look at it that way. But he reminds me of my parents for no reason."

Seeing people like that reminds me of my late parents, and it's not a pleasant memory.

In that sense, Luna and Melissa were more compatible with me.

Both stayed within the boundaries of common sense but stayed true to their desires.

While lost in those stray thoughts, I was walking when the wall along the quiet path suddenly shattered, and someone was flung out.

"Ugh?!"

The person who tumbled out with a gasp was a woman wearing a strange robe.

In one hand, she held a small short sword, and in the other, a dagger.

Her body was covered with wounds.

And the one pursuing and attacking her was a grotesquely twisted giant insect with a man in a black robe riding on it.

Ah, that robe.

The symbol hidden inside the robe that’s hard to see—I know it.

There’s no way I wouldn’t.

A cultist.

Just as Prince Dorn said, I was now sure those cultists were behind this situation.

"Filthy remnant of the persistent moon. There’s nowhere left to run."

The cultist, controlling the insect monster, scattered necromantic mana mercilessly, radiating bloodlust.

The moment the woman adjusted her stance, both of them noticed something strange.

They stopped their actions and turned to look at me.

Their vacant stares seemed to ask, Who the hell is this guy?

"Why stop? Go on and finish what you were doing."

If she had been a normal person, I might have helped immediately.

But anyone with half a brain could figure this out.

The one riding the insect monster?

Definitely a cultist.

And the one fighting him?

A Moon Sentinel.

Getting involved with either was bad news.

"What’s this lunatic babbling about…?"

"Hey, you! You’re strong, right?! Help me!"

Ah, the movie ends here.

I spoke to the woman with a serious expression.

"I don’t work for free. How much?"

"Huh? Eek!"

Before she could comprehend my answer, she was struck by the cultist’s attack and sent flying.

"Do you think anything changes if you interfere? Look, I don’t have the energy to deal with distractions, so just leave. Forget what you saw here and go."

Oh, how humane—for a cultist.

I decided to respond with the same humanity.

"How about this? If you tell me what you cultists are plotting, I’ll let you live."

The cultist’s face twisted in anger.

"So, you weren’t just some unrelated passerby."

He didn’t recognize me.

I knew information didn’t flow well within the cult, but I didn’t realize it was this bad.

The cultist quickly spread necromantic mana, creating a black spear that surrounded the area.

Without hesitation, he launched the spear at me.

The black spear flew toward me like a bullet, but I casually stepped back, and it slammed into the ground where I had stood moments before.

The ground around it began to decay rapidly.

The 3rd-circle necromantic spell, Spear of Decay.

I’d devised something similar in my own magical research.

"Hm? You dodged it? Let’s see how you handle this. Black Spear!"

Boom!

At his words, he cast the spell again, this time firing two black spears at me.

One flew straight, while the other twisted in a bizarre arc, predicting where I might dodge.

Yet both spears only sliced through empty air.

"Impressive. Okay, let’s play a game."

Still mounted on the insect, he leisurely prepared more black spears.

He seemed to be one of the more capable cultists I’d encountered so far.

"I’ll throw these, and you dodge. It’ll be like a beautiful dance performance. Simple, right?"

I mulled over his suggestion for a moment before nodding.

"Sounds fun."

Perhaps my answer pleased him, as he grinned and launched another black spear.

Crash!!!

But the black spears he launched spun mid-air, as if wrested from his control, and turned back toward him.

Then they sped toward him at full force.

"Huh?!"

Startled by his magic turning on him, he flung himself aside to dodge the incoming spears.

In his rush, he fell off the insect monster and rolled unceremoniously across the ground.

"What the hell is this?!"

"If a game’s too easy, it’s no fun. The rules are still the same. If you hit me, I’ll dance."

But if you miss, you’ll be the one dancing.

Twenty black spears manifested around me without any incantation.

"You bastard! How did you use my unique magic?!"

Unique magic?

There are already plenty of similar spells, so that’s a meaningless term.

Magic research often ends up creating things that are inefficient or redundant.

Seeing the number of spears conjured without an incantation, the cultist’s eyes widened.

"Aaargh!"

He frantically cast a defensive spell, but my spears hacked through his magic and corroded it.

Unique magic isn’t just his domain.

All of my magic is unique.

That’s the reality, different from the current magical systems of the continent.

"Wh-what the hell?!"

The efficiency of the black spear was far greater than he had expected, and in his shock, he let out a scream.

Though he tried to flee in a panic, perhaps due to past physical training, the black spears—lacking any corrosive ability—pierced through his limbs in an instant, pinning him against the wall.

While the non-corrosive black spears impaled his limbs, those imbued with corrosion arranged themselves in a pattern resembling a constellation, forming a massive sealing spell.

At the same time, as if the mental control over them had been broken, the swarm of insect monsters that had followed him let out an eerie screech and lunged at him.

It was as if they were venting their rage against the cultist who had enslaved them.

“Oh… Oh no?! Stay back! Stay back!!”

Crunch!!

“Aaaargh!!”

A massive insect clamped down on his arm, tearing into his flesh, and his screams echoed through the air.

Simultaneously, several corrosive black spears lodged into the insect monsters, rapidly dissolving their bodies and snuffing out their lives.

“Urgh?!”

“Now, let's hope you have a loose tongue.”

Desperately, he attempted to resist by unleashing his necromantic mana.

However, each and every spell he cast was intercepted and stolen before it could take effect, leaving his face filled with despair.

“This… this is absurd…”

“Let’s not make this difficult. What exactly are you cultists up to here?”

The cultists had done the same thing before.

They had overturned the royal capital’s dungeon in the Bata Kingdom to awaken a lich, cursing the king in the process.

They had also attempted to capture a kraken to harness its power, only to suffer a devastating defeat.

At this point, their intentions were painfully transparent.

They sought to claim hidden, overwhelming power as their own.

In fact, they had already succeeded in obtaining a dangerous lifeform known as the Devil’s Tree.

“W-What are you talking about?”

“What are you trying to claim this time?”

He groaned in pain, then smirked.

“I don’t know what you’re misunderstanding, but do you really think I’m going to tell y— Aaaaagh!!”

His screams rang out as I flicked my fingers, and one of the black spears I had stolen from him drove itself into his wound like a branding iron.

The corrosive spear rapidly ate away at his flesh from the point of contact.

It was an agony that no one could endure for long.

“Huff… Huff…!”

As he gasped in pain, I silently observed him before pressing the spear deeper once more.

“Aaaaargh!!!”

“Chunsik, shut him up.”

At my command, the dead insect monster crumbled into dust before reforming into a ghostly specter.

“W-What kind of undead is this?!”

It manifested physical force and clamped its massive legs over his mouth.

“Mmph!! Mmmmph!!”

“Blink if you’re ready to talk.”

“Mmmmph!!”

When I drove the black spear into his wound again, twisting it as I did, his body continued to corrode, and blood-tears streamed from his eyes.

As a fanatical cultist, he was more resilient than expected, but in the face of torture, few could endure.

Ultimately, he blinked frantically, pleading for mercy.

When I finally released his mouth, he let out ragged breaths.

“I won’t ask twice. If you don’t answer immediately, I won’t be interested in hearing your answer anymore.”

Terrified, he screamed out.

“I-It was because of a rumor! There was word that a powerful artifact was being circulated in this city!”

“That sounds like a lie.”

“I swear it’s the truth! I’m not lying! I really mean it!”

“Then what’s this? Do you think I’m blind?”

“I-I don’t know… I really don’t! I wasn’t the one who caused this phenomenon!”

“That makes sense. It wasn’t you—it was probably your superior or one of your allies.”

As I levitated another black spear, he shrieked in terror.

“Aaaaaah!! Please! Please believe me! I swear!”

His desperate cries weren’t necessarily those of a liar.

“That statement is not false.”

At that moment, the woman who had fought the cultists approached, clutching her wounds.

She was from the Moon Watchers, if I recalled correctly.

Unlike the cultists, they weren’t my direct enemies, but they also weren’t trustworthy—they killed nobles and commoners alike without distinction.

“It’s not false? What do you mean?”

“Our order also received the same information. That’s why I came to this city as well.”

Wait, seriously?

The cultists weren’t responsible for this?

When I turned to the cultist, he furiously nodded as if desperate to prove his innocence.

“What about the others in your group?”

“Ugh… Ugh… A few others… But that damn woman wiped them all out…”

Then who was truly responsible for this fog phenomenon?

Was someone orchestrating this situation from behind the scenes?

Reflecting on my earlier conversation with the Librarian, I recalled that this was a power far too bizarre for any ordinary human to wield.

Even the Prince had only heard that the cultists had entered the city—he never definitively claimed they were the culprits.

“So, you don’t know anything beyond that?”

The cultist nodded.

As I stared at him, I drew my cursed sword.
